Laser Hair Removal

Melanin pigment within the hair follicle is the target of the laser beam. The marked melanin is only readily available during a portion of the hair growth cycle. At any one time only a percentage of the hairs are in the vulnerable portion of the cycle. Therefore, to effectively reach all the hairs in any area, it will most likely take more than one treatment. The target of the laser beam is melanin which exists in the skin, more so in those of darker skin color or those who have recently tanned. Newer generation lasers have been designed to safely bypass this skin melanin and to safely and effectively treat patients of all skin types.

Is hair loss permanent?

Some current research is suggesting that in properly selected and treated patients, the hair loss may be permanent. However, long-term studies are pending. Until permanent hair loss can be proven scientifically, the FDA has limited companies to declaring that lasers can achieve "permanent hair reduction."

As laser technology continues to improve it is becoming increasing clear that laser hair removal is rapidly becoming the best option for permanent reduction. When you consider that the path to permanency requires only a few treatments instead of years the benefits become obvious. To determine if you are proper candidate or to answer more questions about laser hair removal please give us a call.

Depending upon the size and the number of areas being treated, a single laser hair removal session can take anywhere from several minutes to several hours to complete. Though a topical anesthetic may be used for those who are very sensitive to pain, anesthesia is not required in most cases.

There is generally very little downtime associated with laser hair removal and most patients can return to their normal activities right away. Some temporary swelling or reddening may occur which usually clears up within a few days. Sun exposure will need to be limited for a period of time. Patients with dark or tanned skin may not respond well to treatment and may have an increased risk of damage to the skin. Otherwise, there are few complications associated with the procedure.

Aesthera Photoneumatics Laser Treatment

Photopneumatics is a painless treatment for acne, skin rejuvenation, pigmented lesions, vascular lesions, sun damaged skin, and hair reduction. All with deep pore purification.

PPx therapy’s patented process combines the unique properties of therapeutic light with pressure (pneumatic energy) to bring you a breakthrough method for the treatment of unwanted hair, uneven pigment and unwanted veins.

A “pulling up” motion gently lifts a small amount of the treatment area into a specially designed hygienic treatment tip. Targets (unwanted hair, unwanted pigments and unsightly veins) are lifted and brought closer to the skin’s surface. When therapeutic light is applied, the light is converted to a gentle heat energy which is absorbed by the target (unwanted hair, unwanted pigments and unsightly veins). The energy applied is concentrated in the target to be destroyed, protecting the surrounding normal tissue. Skin is then instantly returned to its normal position and the treatment handpiece is moved onto the next treatment area. The process is repeated until the entire treatment area is covered.

Before the Treatment:

Before treatment begins, your physician will apply a soothing mist to your skin, to hydrate it.

During Treatment:

Your treatment provider will place the Aesthera handpiece on the area to be treated. Based on your skin type (the amount of melanin in your skin) and the body part being treated, appropriate settings will be selected.

You will feel a gentle and warm sensation as your skin is drawn into the treatment tip. In less than a second, mild light energy will be applied and you will feel your skin being gently released back into normal position. Your treatment provider will then move on to the next treatment area, and repeat the process over the entire treatment area.

Photopneumatic therapy is very fast. Below is a comparison of typical treatment durations for commonly requested treatments.

Body Part PPx Therapy Treatment Time (mins)
Skin Rejuvenation - Face 4
Skin Rejuvenation - Chest 3
Hair Removal - Bikini 5
Hair Removal - Under Arm 3
Hair Removal - Legs 15
Hair Removal - Back 10

Post Treatment:

There are no post-treatment regimens associated with PPx Therapy. So once your treatment is done, you are free to resume your normal activities.

Titan® Laser

The Titan® gives you an all-natural option to enhance skin tone. Titan uses light energy to heat the dermis deep beneath your skin's surface. Without surgery, recovery time, or injections, Titan is an ideal solution for your face, abdomen, arms and more.

How does the Titan work?

The Laser Genesis uses innovative technology to promote vibrant, healthy looking skin. Laser Genesis is a non-invasive treatment that safely and effectively treats fine lines and wrinkles, large pores, uneven skin texture, diffused redness and scars. 4-6 treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart are recommended for optimal results.

Onychomycosis - Nail Fungus
Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the toenails or fingernails and is the most common nail disease in adults.  It can cause the nails to loosen, thicken, discolor, or split.  Initially onychomycosis appears to be only a cosmetic concern but without treatment the nails can become so thick they press on the inside of the shoes causing pain and irritation.
In the past topical anti-fungals and oral medications were used to treat onychomycosis.  However the rate of recurrence is high and the treatment can be expensive.  One of the newest ways to treat the nails is with laser therapy. The laser beam can penetrate the nail tissue and disrupt fungal and other pathogens enough to kill them. One such laser is the Laser Genesis.

Can tattoos be removed safely and without scarring?

There have been great advances in tattoo removal in the past few years. This makes it easier than ever to erase unwanted ink from the recent or distant past.

Some of the greatest innovation has been in the lasers used for tattoo removal. Older laser technology often scarred the area, resulting in abnormal looking skin in the area where the tattoos are removed. With todays technology, we can target more colors than ever, and do it without scarring. We have the latest technology in our laser clinic at The Dermatology Institute.

Is it painful?

When someone considers tattoo removal, a common fear is that of pain. Our doctors have several ways to provide anesthesia to the area, allowing for a pain free laser tattoo removal session.

How it Works:

Tattoo lasers work by targeting the pigment put into the dermis (the living portion of the skin) by the tattoo artist. The energy from the light is rapidly absorbed by the pigment, breaking it up into tiny particles which the body can clear safely and naturally. Generally, several sessions are needed to safely fade away the pigment. The number of sessions depend on the skill of the tattoo artist, the type of ink used, and the colors in the tattoo.

Our Board Certified, Fellowship Trained Laser Physicians:

Another key factor in reducing the number of treatments needed to fade the tattoos is the knowledge and skill of the laser physician performing the treatments. Our physicians are all MD's that have all completed laser fellowships and performed laser research at the most recognized laser institutions in the US. They are recognized experts in lasers. Between them, they teach laser physics and advanced laser applications at Northwestern University, they conduct groundbreaking research in the treatment of tattoos, and are invited to speak nationally and internationally on lasers.

If you have a tatto which you would like to alter or remove, schedule a consultation with our laser clinic today.
