Cosmetic Procedures - SclerotherapyDr. Jeffrey Hsu is featured in the Fall Issue of New Beaty Magazine discussing leg veins and sclerotherapy.
What is microsclerotherapy? Microsclerotherapy is the injection of a medicine into leg veins or hand veins. This causes the vessels to gradually close, resulting in a lighter color and improvement in appearance or complete disappearance of the vessels. What is the cause of these vessels? There are many contributing factors. Heredity is one of the most significant factors. Pregnancy, hormone replacement therapy, oral contraceptives, obesity, trauma, and long periods of standing or sitting may cause the vessels to appear or become more prominent. Is there a way of preventing these vessels from occurring? Exercise, weight loss and medical grade support hose may help limit the development of new vessels.. What can I expect during the procedure? A very fine needle is used to inject the solution into the vessel. A few seconds of mild itching or discomfort at the site of the injection may be experienced. Since many vessels interconnect, one injection may eradicate several dozen vessels at one time. What are the side effects? Temporary side effects such as bruising, swelling, tenderness, itching, cramping, and pigmentation changes may occur. How soon will the vessels disappear? Fading occurs over several weeks. Small vessels should disappear and larger vessels should decrease in size. Treatment of existing vessels does not prevent the formation of new ones. More than one treatment session may be required. Are there any contraindications for this procedure? Patients with a history of inflammation of the veins (thrombophlebitis), blood clots in the legs, clotting disorder, diabetes, arterial or other vascular problems, or previous leg ulcers are not treated. Pregnant women should postpone treatment until six months after delivery. |
