Hair Restoration

There are many causes for hair loss. In the overwhelming majority of males, the cause is hereditary . It is important to remember that most adults lose 75-125 hairs per day. New hairs usually grow from the follicles to replace the lost hairs. As long as this process remains balanced, the number of hairs on the scalp remain constant. When hairs are not replaced due to the shrinkage of the hair follicles, it results in male pattern baldness. The tendency for male and female pattern hair loss can be genetically inherited from either side of the family and begins to develop after puberty. Hair restoration surgery is a permanent solution to lost hair. It is a minor out patient surgery that requires little down time, and uses your own hair to fill in where hair has been lost.

HAIR RESTORATION FAQ’S

1) What is hair restoration?

Hair restoration is an in office procedure used to take healthy hair from the back of the scalp and place it in areas of balding to create a natural looking hairline. A strip of hair is taken from the back of the scalp. Genetically programmed to withstand hair loss, the hair taken from the back of the scalp will retain this characteristic when transplanted to other areas.

2) Who is a good candidate for a hair restoration?

Potential candidates include anyone concerned about hair loss.

3) How do I prepare for the procedure?

You will be given an antibiotic to take beginning the day before surgery. Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, or Vitamin E, or herbal medications for two weeks prior to surgery. Refrain from alcohol and smoking for one week prior to surgery.

4) How is the procedure performed?

Your doctor will outline the area to be transplanted and create recipient sites for the grafts. Under local anesthetic, the donor strip is removed from the back of the scalp and carefully and meticulously processed into tiny grafts containing one to three hairs. These grafts will be transplanted into the recipient sites to recreate a natural look.

5) What happens after the procedure?

There is little discomfort after the procedure. A bandage is placed that will be removed in 24-48 hours. Apply ice to minimize swelling. Pain medicine will be prescribed as needed. Sleeping with the head elevated will also help to minimize swelling. You will return in one day for a follow up visit and a dressing change. Sutures will be removed in 7-10 days.

6) When can I resume normal activity?

Most patients can resume normal activity and exercise in one week after the procedure.

7) What results can I expect?

Most patients attain the look they desire in about eight to twelve months. Because the grafts are made from your own hair, they are perfectly matched to your hair color and texture giving you the most natural look possible. Your hairline will be natural and the replacement zones will be nearly invisible.
