Being a new mother is an exciting time in life, but pregnancy can be tough on the the body. Even with an active lifestyle, exercise, and a healthy diet, getting your skin and body back in shape can be a challenge. Fortunately, there are many new advancements that can help.

"Pregnancy can be hard on the venous system, and lead to spider and varicose veins," says Dr. Jeffrey Hsu, a board certified Dermatologist at the Dermatology Institute. "Asclera is a new, FDA approved treatment for these annoying veins that is a quick and easy office procedure."

To get rid of troublesome fat deposits in the tummy, love handles, and upper /lower back without surgery, our doctors now recommend CoolSculpting. "For some people, this is replacing liposuction"

A chemical peel or silkpeel is a quick pick-me-up for dull looking skin. Lee Ann, a licensed aesthetician, says, "Mom's hardly have time to take care of themselves. Being treated to a peel or a silkpeel is a fast way to look and feel better quickly.

Finally, a spring makeover can make new Mom's look and feel refreshed. Jenna, a licensed aesthetician, recommends, "a new sunscreen and mineral makeup can improve and protect the look of the skin." We can help you pick out a skin care regimen that is right for you. Stop by the Dermatology Institute in Naperville for your complimentary evaluation.

Solutions to Common Men’s Skin Care Problems

Shaving can often present a challenging problem for men. When done improperly it can lead to razor bumps, cuts and irritation.

It first begins with your products. Many men find that shaving becomes easier when using aloe-based products; it helps the razor to glide across the face. Avoid alcohol-based after shaves; they tend to only irritate the skin. Before applying the shaving gel, be sure to soften the hairs and open the pores by massaging warm water into the beard area. Be sure to shave with the grain first to obtain optimal results. Be sure to always apply a soothing product for post care, such as Colorescience Soothing Post Shave Gel. This lightweight soothing gel is loaded with skin calming ingredients such as aloe and tea tree oil to minimize irritation from razor burn and calm ingrown hairs or blemishes.

If you find that you are suffering from severe cases of inflammation or razor bumps, you might be an excellent candidate for laser hair removal. GentleLase hair removal by Candela is our latest option for hair removal. The GentleLase system requires no creams, gels, waxing or needles. The treatments are quick, comfortable, safe, and long lasting. This laser emits a gentle beam of light which passes through your skin and is absorbed by the hair follicle. Once absorbed, the laser energy transforms to heat and destroys the hair follicles without affecting the surrounding skin. Hair removal can be done on various areas of the body. We recommend 4-6 treatments approximately every 4-6 weeks.

DO THE WINTER BLUES HAVE YOU DOWN?

A REJUVENATING LASER TREATMENT IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING YOUR SKIN BACK TO LIFE.

Here at the Dermatology Institute in Naperville we offer non-ablative, non-invasive laser treatments perfect for sagging and dull skin as well as fine lines and wrinkles. These anti-aging therapies offer you maximum skin rejuvenation effects with virtually no downtime.

LIMELIGHT laser skin treatment: This non-invasive laser procedure offers the advantages of improving skin tone and texture. Within one to three weeks of treatment, brown spots will fade and diffuse redness will decrease, resulting in a more even complexion. We recommend three treatments spaced four weeks apart for best results. Limelight may be combined with our Titan or Laser Genesis therapies for a multi-dimensional skin rejuvenation experience.

LASER GENESIS: Treat signs of premature aging and uneven skin tone and texture on the face, neck and chest, and regain vibrant and healthy skin. Laser Genesis safely and gently heats the outer layers of the skin which allows collagen regeneration to take place beneath the skin. This collagen regeneration continues over time, minimizing pores and improving skin tone and texture. You will see a creamier, healthy complexion with no downtime.

TITAN: Titan uses light energy to heat the deep layers of the skin. This produces collagen contraction and leaves you with tighter, younger looking skin. This treatment can be preformed on the face, neck and stomach area. There is no downtime for this procedure. We recommend between 1-3 treatments for maximum results.

ISOLAZ DEEP PORE THERAPY: Isolaz is a painless treatment that combines broadband light and vacuum to help loosen and extract dirt, blackheads, and excess oil from deep within your pores. Also it helps to destroy acne causing bacteria and facial redness. Isolaz treatments can also be used to help with skin rejuvenation and hair removal.

Let us guide you into choosing the most appropriate treatment regimen based on an in depth, customized skin analysis leading to the best possible outcome. Come see us in Aesthetics at The Dermatology Institute in Naperville for your customized skin rejuvenation plan designed to give you vibrant, firmer, glowing skin. WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTALLY SENSITIZED SKIN?

Environmentally Sensitized Skin can affect any age, race, and skin type. Symptoms usually include itching, burning, dryness, flushing and stinging.

The cause can be due to micro-environment, caused by what we apply directly to our skin. Ingredients in our skin care products and our cosmetics can play a big role in causing this irritation.  Micro-climate is what we are exposed to in our home, car, airplane or office; they also play a large factor in sensitizing our skin.

Some things to consider if you are struggling with this condition are list below:

  1. Recent surgeries
  2. medications
  3. stress levels
  4. water temperature, very hot or very cold can be very irritating
  5. exfoliation
  6. key ingredients in products
  7. waxing procedures
  8. aggressive treatments, such as microdermabrasion or peels
  9. alcohol consumption
  10. sun-exposure
  11. lack of water intake.

Successfully treating sensitized skin starts with addressing some of your triggers!!!!!

Improve your Rosacea

We all look forward to the warm weather after a long winter. However warmer temperatures can be difficult for people that suffer from rosacea.

What is rosacea?

Rosacea is an inflammatory condition of the skin that affects over 14 million Americans. It usually occurs when the blood vessels that are located close to the skin’s surface expand, swell and then cause the skin to become red. Women are affected more than men. Rosacea can be set off by triggers like the sun, stress, and certain foods which cause the skin to become red, inflamed and flushed.

The good news is that rosacea can be controlled. Depending on the severity of your rosacea, you physician may prescribe topical medications, oral medications or a combination of both. In addition to medications, light chemical peels may help. Glycolic, salicylic, and lactic acid peels can be used to lessen the severity of the rosacea. This can help even out skin tone.

In some cases, laser treatments can be used to combat redness. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or the V-beam laser are very helpful in reducing redness and enlarged vessels. The laser seals off bloods vessels without damaging the skin. There is currently no cure for rosacea, but eliminating triggers using the correct skincare, and getting proper medical treatment can make this condition very easy to control and less noticeable.

At the Dermatology Institute we offer many treatments to give you the healthy glowing skin you have always dreamed of. Don’t suffer anymore……

Our favorite products to treat and calm the skin are:

  • Avene Redness Relief Crème with SPF 25
  • Obagi Rosaclear System

“The Winter Itch”

Itching to rid yourself of dry skin? Dry skin can show up anywhere and anytime but is extremely common in the winter months since there is little humidity outside and dry air inside. It is difficult for your skin to retain moisture during these cold months, leading to dry, even cracked skin. Try these tips to stop that dryness in its tracks:

1. When you feel the urge to scratch, apply cool water or a cool wet towel to the area until the itching sensation subsides, then apply thick moisturizer such as Cerave Cream.

2. Avoid HOT showers. Use creamy washes or moisturizing soaps such as Dove Beauty Body Wash or Oil of Olay cream body wash instead of harsh foaming bars or washes. While skin is still damp, apply a moisturizing cream.

3. Put those scrubbing beads aside. Once or twice a week is all the skin needs for manual exfoliation. Over exfoliating leads to a loss of moisture and more dryness of the skin.

If your dryness is a chronic condition, consider a trip to your dermatologist who can properly diagnose your condition and prescribe appropriate medications if needed.

Products we love to fight dry skin:

$$ Avene Body Lotion with Cold Cream - $30 - This lotion contains natural plant oils and Avene cold cream in a fluid formula leaving your skin immediately hydrated and silky soft. Great for very dry, sensitive skin.

$ Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion – this lotion containing natural colloidal oatmeal hydrates and softens as it calms and soothes irritated skin.
