What is a Nurse Practitioner?

Education/Training

Presently in Illinois, Certified Nurse Practitioners (CNP’s) are experienced RN’s who have formally obtained advanced education and clinical training in diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions. After completing an accredited university graduate program, a Nurse Practitioner must then pass a national certification exam as a CNP from a national certifying body such as the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, or the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Once certified, a Nurse Practitioner seeks license as an Advanced Practice Nurse, (APN) and practices in accordance with the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. Since their inception in the 1960’s CNP’s can be found in all 50 states.

Nurse Practitioners in Dermatology

CNP’s are trained in dermatology in a number of ways. Most dermatologic CNP’s are trained on the job by their collaborating dermatologist. CNP’s receive additional training through their required continuing education hours, and attendance at dermatology conferences as well as a variety of other sources. CNP’s can conduct physical exams, and can diagnose and provide medical and surgical treatment for a wide variety of conditions. Working in collaboration with a physician, a Nurse Practitioner provides high quality, individualized care for the lifespan of a patient’s special dermatologic needs.
